How to Create a Zero-Waste Bathroom With These Easy Swaps

How to Create a Zero-Waste Bathroom With These Easy Swaps

At Wild & Rust, we're making 2022 the year to seriously cut down on plastic. From reusable bags to purchasing jarred goods over plastic bottles, every little thing you can do to reduce your plastic use will go a long way to helping the planet!

As things stand, the amount of plastic rubbish that seeps into our beautiful oceans every year is set to triple by 2040. If that happens, we'll be choking the seas with 29 million metric tonnes every twelve months. But, we can stop that!

You can start reducing global plastic pollution right from the comfort of your own home. Switching to a plastic-free household may sound challenging, but if you break it down room by room, it's actually very easy. Our sustainable shop in Henley-on-Thames has lots of zero-waste swaps and sustainable tips to help you on your way, too!

To get started, let's begin by looking at your bathroom and the swaps you can make to become plastic-free.

Ditch Plastic Shower Gel and Shampoo Bottles

When you think about it, there's no need for all of our shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, and other magic potions in our bathrooms to come in plastic bottles. Opting for glass is not only better for the planet, but it looks much chicer, too!

We have a wide range of plastic-free alternatives, helping you to shop sustainably. Take a peep at our Rosemary, Geranium & Mint Multi-Purpose Wash as a sustainable shower gel, shampoo, and hand wash, our sweetly fragranced Lavender Bath Salts for ultimate relaxation, and our Wild Fig & Saffron Bath Essence for a luxury soak when you want to feel your very best. All of these are plastic-free, blended with a high content of natural ingredients and are made right here in the UK, giving them a low carbon footprint too!

If you're up for going back to a more traditional way of washing, why not buy a few handmade soap bars for your plastic-free bathroom? Our Fruits of Nature Rose Soap is made in Yorkshire by a family-run company from natural, nourishing ingredients designed to leave your skin healthy and soft. Vegan, sustainable, and with a beautiful floral scent, every bathroom should have at least one bar!

Zero-Waste Body Lotion From Our Sustainable Shop

If you love stepping out of your bath and treating your skin to a silky moisturiser, you don't have to constantly buy plastic bottles and tubs. We have a wide range of glass bottled creams, like this invigorating and warm Seaweed & Samphire Hand & Body Lotion. Dark, woody and with an uplifting freshness, it's the perfect comfort scent and will linger on your skin all day. It's also made from 98% natural ingredients that have been selected to give your skin a healthy boost of moisture, making sure you glow wherever you go.

If you're not a huge fan of creams, our Energising Bath & Body Oil is an ideal alternative. Versatile and wonderfully scented with natural oils, you can apply it directly for silky smooth skin, or add a drop or two to your bath for a relaxing, nourishing soak. A fantastic product worthy of it's 5-star rating!

Switch to Plastic-Free Toilet Roll

Did you know that a household of four people uses eight toilet rolls a week on average? If you're still buying your toilet paper in plastic packaging, that's going to rack up quickly. But, there are more and more alternatives out there to help you go plastic-free in your bathroom.

We particularly love rolls that are individually wrapped in beautiful paper designs, like these from Bumboo (bonus points for each roll being produced from sustainably sourced bamboo, too!). You can pop them in a wire basket or stack them on a shelf for a stylish addition to your bathroom.

Accessorise Your Space With Plants

Your bathroom is a sanctuary. It's a place to unwind in a hot, fragranced bath after a long day and get ready to feel your best before an evening out. If you want it to feel like a haven, there's no doubt you'll want to accessorise it to make the space feel welcoming. But how do you do that sustainably?

Our solution at Wild & Rust is to opt for plenty of greenery. Many plants thrive in humid environments like bathrooms, and they're an eco-friendly way to add colour, life, and character to your space. We have plenty of plants to choose from at our sustainable shop in Henley-on-Thames, along with a gorgeous selection of artisan plant pots.

If you're not green-fingered and the thought of taking care of plants isn't ideal, why not take a look at our Dried Flower Bar? These gorgeous flowers don't need to be watered and will last for years to come, adding splashes of colour to your bathroom if strategically placed - just don't get them wet!

Get Creative With Sustainable Storage

A bathroom needs plenty of storage, but that doesn't mean you need to stock up on a mountain of plastic. There are so many other options to keep your beautiful glass bottles sorted and your towels safely bundled. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of creativity! Luckily, we've got plenty of ideas to help you.

Our Vintage Hancock Bros. haulage Crate is the perfect spot to place your folded towels and washcloths, as are our Seagrass Baskets. If you're looking for a plastic-free solution to keep your lotions and potions tidy, what about our Little Green Trug from France? Or, for products you'd like to keep more private, this incredible Thomas Vintage Military Trunk is a real showstopper and will add an industrial-chic feel to your space.

We love sourcing unique pieces of sustainable furniture for our shop, so keep checking our Sustainable Home range for our newest finds!
